The History of Arleen

The name Arleen or Arlene has a long history that has its roots in Ireland where it has remained a popular name for centuries. Despite the name itself coming from Ireland before arriving in England and moving around the world to North America and beyond, it is a variant of the French name, Charlene. In France, the name was the feminine version of the name, Charles that has been translated to give a meaning of Arleen as Free Man by some scholars.

Very few babies are give the name Arleen in England. In 2018 and 2019 no babies were given this name. However the name was far popular in the 1970’s than it is today.

Famous People Called Arleen

In the last few years, the popularity of Arleen has come from one of the most famous bearers of the name, the English choreographer, Arlene Philips. The dancer and TV talent show judge made her name as a choreographer for Broadway and London’s West End before choreographing the 1982 adaptation of “Annie”.

The list of famous people named Arlene includes the politician and the First Minister of Northern Ireland, Arlene Foster. The politician has twice led Northern Ireland’s Government from 2016-2017 and took up the role again in 2020.
