The given name Charlotte originates from France with Germanic roots originally and is the female form of Charles. Popularized by Queen Charlotte Sophia, wife of King George III of England who ruled in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century (during the French and American Revolutions), she was the mother of fifteen children and a patron of Mozart and Bach.

The meaning of Charlotte can be petite and feminine or delicate and allows for such cute nicknames as Lotte and Charlie. However it has also been seen to mean “free man” like its counterpart Charlie in the past and some interpret it to mean a strong or free woman.
